Rowena Calvert - Celloist

Scholarship at Royal Northern College of Music
Rowena Calvert made her debut in the Queens Hall, Edinburgh, when 12 years old. She was national finalist in the BBC Young Musicians 2002 and has won the Jellineck Award and a Martin Musical Scholarship. Rowena has performed as a soloist at London's South Bank Centre, Royal Albert Hall and Wigmore Hall, and given concertos with the London Mozart Players, Harlow Symphony Orchestra and the Meadows Symphony Orchestra. An experienced chamber musician, Rowenna regularly performs with harpist Eleanor Turner her piano trio, Estrella.

Currently studying on a scholarship with Hannah Roberts at the Royal Northern College of Music. Rowena was previously a scholar at the International Yehudi Menuhin School studying Cello with Leonid Gorokhov, and a scholar at the Royal Academy of Music.

Further scholarships have led to performances at the Kronberg and Manchester Cello Festivals, the World Cello Congress (USA) and the Menuhin Festival in Gstaad. Rowena has taken part in masterclasses with Rostropovich, Maria Kliegel, Bernhard Greenhouse, Steven Isserlis and Gary Hoffman. In 2003 she spent six months in India teaching at the Mehli Mehta Music Foundation and organising a concert series in Bombay.

In 2005, she played in Spain with Maxim Vengerov and the Almeria Orchestra and will soon be playing with the BBC Philharmonic and the Halle Orchestras. She recently won a competition to play the Dvorak concerto with the RNCM Symphony Orchestra and participated in masterclasses with Ralph Kirshbaum and Anner Bylsma.
